The Hut People and Kelly Oliver

alt

The Hut People are constantly gaining more of reputation as one of the most entertaining acts to appear on the folk scene in a long while. In their surprisingly engaging and often hilarious show, they perform a truly unique high-octane blend of folk music from around the world - perfectly formed & embellished with a foot stomping accordion and mind-boggling array of exotic percussion (with some Quebecois foot percussion & dancing thrown in for good measure too!). A hugely entertaining duo getting unbelievable feedback from audiences, festival organizers and music press alike.

Our first album came out in January 2010 titled 'Home Is Where The Hut Is' (Fellside Records). Our second album 'Picnic' was released in April 2012 and we are in the final stages of finishing our third album (again on Fellside) due for release later in 2013.

Champions of the standing ovation, The Hut People are rapidly gaining more and more of reputation as one of the hottest & most entertaining world/folk acts touring today.

Taking the audience on a voyage across the globe with their material, they perform a high-octane unique blend of home-grown tunes mixed with British, Nordic and European folk music, perfectly formed & embellished with the driving accordion and a mind-boggling array of exotic percussion.

Accordionist Sam Pirt also performs with 422 (previous Radio 2 Folk awards winners) and is a very experienced musician who is well established within the folk circuit. Sam has in the past performed alongside Kathryn Tickell, The Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Jez Lowe, Brian Finnegan, Brian McNeill and many others. He is also the founder of Ethno England.

Percussionist Gary Hammond has for the past 12 years recorded and toured with The Beautiful South. He has also worked with Nina Simone and has frequently been a part of many other groups and collaborations within the World, Jazz & Pop genres.

Great music aside, a show from The Hut People is filled to the brim with spontaneity, often hilarious patter and a 110% commitment to their getting-the-crowd-involved ethos. Don’t miss them.

alt

Kelly Oliver is a folk singer/songwriter, guitarist and harmonicist, influenced mainly by acoustic music and traditional Irish folk music. After graduating from Royal Holloway University of London, and travelling around Europe, Argentina and Brazil, she decided in April 2013 to pursue her enjoyment in music. She established herself as a folk singer after her first folk club gig in June 2013 at the award-winning Hitchin Folk Club,  and was asked back by them to support Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston, The Urban Folk Quartet, Gilmore & Roberts and Cathryn Craig and Brian Willoughby in 2013 and 2014. She has played numerous folk clubs around the UK, and supported The Young’uns, Ewan McLennan, Dave Swarbrick, Emma Stevens and Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston. She is also involved in the current Armistice Pals project alongside Lucy Ward, Johnny Coppin, Edwina Hayes and many others, with the charity single 'Where Have All The Flowers Gone' recently having national airplay on BBC Radio 2.

Kelly has performed at festivals around the UK, including FolkEast, Rhythms of the World, Purbeck, Hitchin Folk Club and Cambridge Folk Festival. After winning a competition to open the Folkstock Presents stage at Folkstock in September 2013, she was offered the chance to professionally record her first EP, ‘Far From Home’, released on 26th November 2013 by Folkstock Records. The first single from the EP was the track ‘He Walked on the Side of the Sea’ ft. BBC Folk Award Nominee Will Pound and was released on 17th March 2014.

Kelly was delighted to recorded an Under The Apple Tree session at the Whispering Bob Broadcasting Company in the summer of 2014 and was interviewed by the legendary Whispering Bob Harris as part of the session. She returned to WBBC again with Luke Jackson in October to record a live version of their duet Diamond Girl. The single Diamond Girl was played on Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show on October 1st, and the same song played on Bob Harris’ BBC Radio 2 Sunday show on the 12th October. Kelly’s debut album ‘This Land’ was released by Folkstock Records on 27th Oct 2014, and features the legendary Dave Swarbrick, fiddle player from Fairport Convention, as well as BBC Folk Award Nominees Sunjay and Luke Jackson. Kelly was privileged to win a Help Musicians UK Emerging Excellence Award which funded the cost of recording her album and she is now pursuing her musical career full time.
