The Stringbeans Quartet

alt

The Stringbeans Quartet play the sort of music that string quartets don’t normally get to play. The quartet includes Beth Porter (cello), Emma Hooper (viola) and Sue Lord (violin), as well as Ian Vorley (violin).

The Stringbeans Quartet perform their own original compositions and work with a number of clients including BBC Television and Radio, Peter Gabriel, Newton Faulkner and The Heavy. Based in Bath, UK, they are nown for their versatility, and as well as their own original compositions, play an impressive array of genres and styles including classical, jazz, show-tunes, and modern pop and rock.

Canadian Emma Hooper is a best-selling author, musician and academic. Born and raised in Alberta, she moved to the UK in 2004. After a PhD in musico-literary studies, she now teaches at Bath Spa University (she is currently looking at what Disney princesses being sopranos means about representations of the female body). She recently published her highly-acclimaed debut novel, Etta and Otto and Russell and James (after being fought over by five publishers!) Her other musical guise, Waitress for the Bees is a very popular regular at The Art House. Emma uses her viola, accordion, saw, the glock from the Finnish farm auction, electronics and her voice to play you songs about Dinosaurs and make your heart hurt. In August, 2010, Emma played the Elasmosaurus and Troodon songs for a Finnish Grand Master and he liked them so much that he knighted her the next day.

Beth Porter is an award winning classical musician in her own right, and has toured and sessioned with the likes of Eliza Carthy, Jim Moray, Jackie Oates and Bellowhead. As her reputation as an outstanding session cellist has grown, she has been much sought after by more main stream acts, appearing on albums by Newton Faulkner, Kula Shaker, Petula Clark, The Proclaimers and The Heavy. She has written her own songs and has her own band, Beth Porter & The Availables. Beth sings her endearing songs with a pure yet fragile voice accompanying herself on either cello or ukulele, and it is this signature sound that forms the core of her work with The Availables.
