David Celia & Marla
David Celia is one of Toronto’s most experienced and versatile independent artists and busiest working musicians. He has an audience across Canada and also in Europe and the UK, where he has developed a devoted fan-base. He recently appeared at Glastonbury Festival in England for the second time, as well as Canadian festivals such as Mariposa, Shelter Valley, Hillside, and Blue Skies, along with Larmertree (UK), Blue Balls (CH), Desertfest (GERMANY) and Rock Dans Tous Ses Etats (FR). He is described by music icon Bob Segarini as the best singer-songwriter Canada has ever produced!
David is an astonishing guitar player and gifted multi-instrumentalist with an alt/folk style that's been described as "Beatlesque" in that it crosses many musical genres. Known for his spontaneously driven performances, he performs with the best of the best, including his regular band mates, Cleave Anderson of Blue Rodeo fame, Joan Besen of Prairie Oyster and is in demand as both a musician and a producer/arranger on many of his fellow artist's musical endeavours. Widely regarded as one of Canada's best kept secrets, David receives regular airplay on both the BBC and CBC. David's music consistently appears on critics top 10's and he counts Gordon Lightfoot as a fan. Additionally, David was hand picked by folk legends Ian & Sylvia (Tyson) to be the guitarist at their prestigious Mariposa Hall of Fame induction performance. He's shared the stage with the likes of Martha Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Shawn Colvin, Catherine MacLellan, Ariana Gillis, Sarah Harmer, Owen Pallett, Fairport Convention, Serena Ryder, Ron Sexsmith, Avett Brothers, etc. He is truly a special, world-class artist who charms his audiences with his personality and dazzles them with his exceptional musicianship.
Marla (born 1995) is a German and Spanish singer-songrwriter, based in Heidelberg, Germany. Her upcoming debut album ‘Madawaska Valley’, recorded in Toronto, will be released via Melting Pot Music, a record label in Cologne. Even though Marla sang her whole life, she never considered being a musician. As her sister quit the guitar, Marla picked it and covered songs until she started writing her own songs around the age of 15. Besides the fact she played classical cello since she was 6, she grew up with no musical background in her family. Addicted to live shows in her young age, she crossed Robert Francis way, her biggest influence on music back then. From then on she knew, she would want to touch people through music same as he and many others did.
In the last three years she has routinely performed in some of the best concert houses around her hometown, opening for artists like Jessica Pratt, Spring Offensive, Ewert & The Two Dragons and Rue Royale. Also aspiring to be recognized as a songwriter, her latest tunes are catching up with her stunning voice and intriguing personality. Inspired by traveling the world, 20-years old Marla processes her lost love in her songs, softly picked on her acoustic guitar. Her mellow dreamy melodies accompanied by her airy deep voice remind of artists like Nick Drake and Jessica Pratt.
After touring with David Celia in Germany early 2015, she decided to record her debut album in Toronto with him as producer and sideman. She easily won over audiences playing from Toronto, over Montreal up to Halifax.
