Nelson & Friends
Nelson & Friends is an Afro-fusion collective, which blends the music of Nelson’s native Mozambique with jazz and funk. The group released their debut EP Ana Ndi Angambo on Skyride Records in 2016. Led by Nelson Neves, the band features the legendary Ghanaian-British percussionist Kofi Kari Kari, Aldo Couceiro and Tristan Kennedy on guitar, Tom Fairburn on bass, and Karen Boswell and Dominic Thatcher on sax.
Nelson Neves was born in Beira, Mozambique from the Cena tribe. In 2004, Nelson moved to the United Kingdom and delivered numerous dance workshops in schools, community centres and detention houses. He then gave support to Massukos on their tour in 2008 in the form of dancing and choreography on different stages such Womad Festival, Africa Oye and Glastonbury Festival as well as in other local venues.
In 2015, Nelson created the “Nelson & Friends” collective in London, an Afro-fusion project, which blends Mozambique music with jazz and funk. The collective has gained a reputation around East London (Hackney) for their irresistible rhythms and captivating melodies, which makes it impossible for even the most reluctant dancer not to get up on their feet and move. Everywhere they go, they bring a positive atmosphere and make people dance and enjoy.
As well as being a successful dancer and choreographer, Nelson was the founder of the well-known band in Mozambique called Djaaka who toured the globe before Nelson moved to the UK. The group have gained a reputation around London as a live act, with their irresistible rhythms and captivating melodies making it impossible not to dance.
Nelson & Friends’ music is inspired by the likes of Youssour N’dour, Madala Kunene, Miriam Makeba and Mozambican names such as David Mazembe, Severino and many more.
