Will Varley & Nick Marks - The Walking Tour

Walking The Entire South Coast Of England, From Penzance To Deal, playing gigs along the way.

About The Tour
Walking is the original way to tour. The word ‘Troubadour’ comes from the old french word used to describe the travelling poets and minstrels who wondered around Northern Italy and Southern France in the 12th Century. Fast forward to 2014 and for most musical outfits, touring is about a dirty old vans or public transport. “Humans have a certain capacity for walking, we were a nomadic animal for many thousands of years and our bodies are really designed for it.” explains Will Varley, the 27 year old folk singer from Deal who this spring will travel 450 miles along the south coast of England on foot, playing gigs along the way. A few years ago he waked about a hundred miles from London to his hometown of Deal, Kent in a similar endeavor. “This one is a lot bigger. I think it’ll be a bit nicer though, being close to the sea the whole way. People are amazed when you arrive in their town and say you’ve walked there. It brings a sense of magic to your show.” Varley will be joined by friend and fellow songwriter Nick Marks who is performing the support slots at the shows. The pair begin their trek on April 29th and are set to arrive in Deal for the final show on 29th of May. They are also hoping to raise some money for Bowel Cancer UK so head over to the just giving page if you wish to donate.

Will Varley

Receiving over 30,000 views of his new music video since it was uploaded on January 23rd this year rounds off an incredible 6 months for 26 year old Will Varley, surrounding the release of his second album ‘As The Crow Flies’. Packed tents at Green Man, Secret Garden Party and unofficially Cambridge Folk Festival preceded two consecutive nights selling out The Rosemary Branch Theatre in London and a 33 date tour which saw the Kent based folk singer draw crowds as far afield as York, Bristol and Galway (Ireland). Along the way he’s picked up a whole host of new fans including BBC folk guru Mike Harding, BBC Introducing presenter Tom Simmons and NME award nominee Frank Turner.

In the Autumn Will was invited to join fellow solo act Beans On Toast for ten dates on his UK tour. The pair finished the run of gigs to a sell out crowd at London’s legendary 100 Club. This flurry of fantastic shows follows over five years of solid gigging which has seen Varley travel the length and breadth of the country with his guitar, often on foot, sleeping in a tent and gaining his following person by person. This approach filters right the way through to how Will Varley’s music is delivered, running his record label Smuggler’s Records alongside other independent artists as a DIY arts collective.

Complementing his self-directed music videos, the young troubadour’s live performances have become more and more anarchic over the years. Audience interaction, surreal improvised comedy between songs and chaotic stunts like playing two songs at the same time have made him a firm favourite from festivals to theaters, and ensure you’ll never see the same show twice. The chaos is masterfully controlled however and he will effortlessly follow a shaggy dog story or a roaring talking blues with a heartbreaking ballad or a fiery protest song.

As glowing reviews continue to flood in of the new album, the new mammoth walking tour of the south coast takes place this Spring. Following this an extensive tour of Ireland, Scotland and the North of England is already being planned summer to coincide with what is shaping up to be a rigorous festival season. Simply put, Will Varley is sure to be appearing at a venue near you very soon..

Nick Marks

London born and raised songwriter and performing artist Nick Marks has had a busy 6 months. A sucessful month long residency at New Yorks prestigious 11th Street Bar during December 2013 culminated with shows alongside folk legend Steve Earle & country darling Laura Cantrell as well as an invite to SXSW in Austin where he performed several shows just last month.

In between all of this Nick has also managed to record his debut solo album at Excello recordings in Brooklyn with the help of friend, collaborator and producer Hugh Pool. Now back in the UK and putting the finishing touches to the solo record Nick will be using the Rambling Tour to debut his new material with the record itself scheduled for a UK release on Smugglers Records in late spring.

State side debut single ‘Felicity Bay’, released independently on 5 Hit Factory has charted on numerous East Coast radio charts and a return to NYC for CMJ Festival is October in scheduled but for now all efforts are being put into playing and surviving the gruelling 30 date, 500 mile walk that is the Rambling Tour.
