Acoustic roots duo MAMBO JAMBO (Pete Jack and Frankie Banham) take their audience on a musical journey, mixing up styles from all around the world – from Cuba and Brazil, the Caribbean, New Orleans, bluegrass, and Eastern Europe.
Blending these diverse influences into their own songs and arrangements they create a joyously upbeat and rootsy sound all of their own – a global musical treat with appeal across a very wide audience, and a shared passion worth sharing. Besides strong vocals and harmonies, their instruments are equally varied – with Pete on vocals, guitar, banjo, percussion, tres (traditional Cuban guitar), Brazilian ukulele (cavaquinho), occasional accordion and suitcase (!) and Frankie on vocals, saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar and percussion.
These two multi-instrumental musical explorers have been taking audiences to new places since 1990, with over 1000 gigs behind them. And they give more than just a flavour, having performed and studied music as far afield as Salvador in Brazil, Borneo (playing at the Miri International Jazz Festival), and Havana – where they spent time working with Cuban master musicians, including rehearsing and performing with the groups ‘Estrellas Cubanas’ and ‘Conjunto Chapottin’.
Closer to home, they’ve appeared twice at the Shetland and Sidmouth Folk Festivals, the Cork Jazz Festival and Broadstairs FF. They regularly perform at the Musicport and Beverley festivals plus carnivals, arts centres, acoustic and folk clubs, and all kinds of get-togethers…!!
In 2010 Mambo Jambo appeared in the ‘BBC Symphony For Yorkshire’.
